Structure and procedure of the study programmes

Do you have questions about the study programme in business chemistry? Here you will find some questions and answers for prospective students and students of business chemistry.

Your question remains unanswered? Then please feel free to reach out to the contacts for the study programme in business chemistry.

The academic year comprises winter semester and summer semester. A semester is divided into lecture time and lecture-free time. You can find the exact semester times as well as dates and deadlines at HHU here.

Bachelor
The standard period of study is 7 semesters (= 3.5 years). The bachelor's programme in business chemistry can be started in the winter semester.

The concrete structure of the bachelor's programme can be found in the study plan.

Further information on the bachelor's programme can be found here.

Master
The standard period of study is 3 semesters (= 1.5 years). The master's programme in business chemistry can be started in the winter semester and summer semester.

The concrete structure of the master's programme can be found in the study plan. (start of studies from winter semester 2019/20 or start of studies before winter semester 2019/20).

Further information on the master's programme can be found here.

The study plan is a recommendation that distributes the prescribed modules of the entire study programme over the semesters in an order that makes sense both in terms of content and effort.
Since many courses build on each other and require certain knowledge, students should stick to this plan as far as possible. However, this plan is not a must and can be changed individually.

Bachelor
The modul catalogue provides an overview of the courses and learning content.

Master
The modul catalogue provides an overview of the courses and learning content.

Bachelor
In the study plan, compulsory elective modules are noted from the 5th semester onwards.

In chemistry, you can choose between the compulsory elective modules Fundamentals of biochemistry and Introduction to quantum and computational chemistry. The exact course contents can be found in the module catalogue.

In business administration, 16 credit points are to be acquired in the bachelor's degree through compulsory elective modules. An overview of the current compulsory elective modules can be found here, as well as in the examination regulations.

The contents and duration of the compulsory elective modules can be found in the respective module handbooks.

Master
In chemistry, eight credit points are to be acquired in the master's programme through compulsory elective modules.

In business administration, 40 credit points are to be acquired in the master's programme through compulsory elective modules. An overview of the current compulsory elective modules can be found here, as well as in the examination regulations.

The contents and duration of the compulsory elective modules can be found in the respective module handbooks.

All elective subjects are eligible, all subject combinations make sense. It may be that there are currently more job opportunities for a profile with a specialisation in a particular economics subject - but the job market may well change on this point.
Moreover, doing what everyone else is doing exposes you to tough competition - niche strategies can lead to interesting unique selling points.

Every subject combination is interesting and advantageous in its own right. One piece of advice is therefore: orient yourself to your personal inclinations.

As part of the chemical education, students complete several chemical internships in the laboratory. The bachelor's and master's degree programmes do not include compulsory internships in companies, but it is highly recommended to use the lecture-free period for this. This allows students to gain their first professional experience and get a clearer picture of the field in which they would like to work in the future.

Announcements of future courses can primarily and reliably be found in the courses and notices of the respective chairs. In addition, the notices are published on the homepages and in the course catalogue (HISLSF). This will be activated some time before the start of the coming semester. Please register there for courses within the registration period.

Information on registration procedures, timing and requirements regarding additional work is also communicated on the websites. Courses are usually announced two to three months before the start of the semester and released for registration.

If you need further information, you can contact the responsible assistants and professors. Registration takes place via the HISLSF.
